The Highlander Center is a residential popular education and research organization based on a 106-acre farm in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains, twenty-five miles east of Knoxville, Tennessee.
Since 1932, Highlander has gathered workers, grassroots leaders, community organizers, educators, and researchers to address the most pressing social, environmental and economic problems facing the people of the South.

Leaven is a non-profit organization committed to nurturing the relationship between spirituality and social justice. Since its founding in 1987 by Eleanor S. Morrison and Melanie Morrison, Leaven staff has worked with thousands of people in a variety of settings throughout the United States and Canada. Leaven staff also collaborates with colleagues to design and facilitate seminars, lasting from four to eight months each, that address issues critical for women’s spiritual and political well-being.

From 1953 to 1981 a silver haired woman calling herself only "Peace Pilgrim" walked more than 25,000 miles on a personal pilgrimage for peace. She vowed to "remain a wanderer until mankind has learned the way of peace, walking until given shelter and fasting until given food."
