Another Man From Galilee

He neither asks for money nor passes out donation envelopes after his speeches. He neither wants pity for his situation nor accolades for his work. He speaks to anyone who will listen and his mission is to encourage others to “get their hands dirty for peace.” “I am a Palestinian, a proud Palestinian, a Palestinian Arab,” says Archbishop Elias Chacour. “My mother language is Arabic. I am also a Christian. I am a Palestinian Arab Christian—and a citizen of Israel. This adds confusion to those who think that Palestinians are Muslims and that they are bloodthirsty people born to violence.” He opens his coat and exposes his clean, light gray shirt. “See, I have no bombs.”

USA Patriot Act: A Gradual Erosion of the Constitution

Recent revelations about domestic spying have startled a U.S. public that thought it had adequate safeguards to protect its privacy. But those who have been observing the Bush administration since the 9/11 attacks, namely the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and the Bill of Rights Defense Committee (BORDC), see these revelations as the logical extension of a drive toward a police state, which began with passage of the USA PATRIOT Act.

Why Dayton? Why Not?

Why would citizens in America's heartland think they could strike a chord for peace in the world? "Peace came to our community, and we thought it a significant enough legacy for the world to continue to make it happen," says Tom Young, chair of the Dayton Peace Prize Committee.

The committee is part of a community planning group called Dayton: A Peace Process (DAPP). It has organized a series of high- profile events this fall to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Dayton Peace Accords. The highlight is tonight, when the Dayton Peace Prize will be conferred to Ambassador Richard Holbrooke, the architect of the accords, which ended the 1992-95 war in Bosnia.
